Dean Winstanley.
“Over the Top” or heading for the top.

Dean Winstanley.

It’s been one great year for the guy from Rotherham..... Story by Carol Geddes

Dean is 28 years old and lives in Rotherham with partner Debbie. He has 5 children, Ryan, Conner, Kiera, Chelsea and Charlie and he works as a machine driver. He comes from a Dart playing family and therefore actually started throwing darts at 18 months old he continued to play until he was 12 when he stopped because he wanted to play out with his mates.

At the age of 21 whilst working away he joined Chris Mason’s team in Wembley and admits that at first he was rubbish. Two years ago Dean decided to become a more dedicated player and started playing superleague as well as doing the competition circuit around Europe.  He got his invite to Yorkshire at the beginning of this season and due to Scott Waites having other commitments.

Lakeside here I come.

German Open Champion 2010, England Open Champion 2010, Belgium Open Champion 2010.

Dean played in the first match of the season in the A team which he won but by previous agreement was then dropped back to the squad to allow Scott back in.  He then played in the ‘B’ in our December match against Kent and following more ‘A’ team problems was promoted to the ‘A’ overnight.

He says his high points in darts so far have been winning the men’s pairs at the England Open and Flanders as well as being runner up in all 4 competitions at Turkey 2009.
He reports his low point as missing Lakeside qualification by a couple of points in his first year competitive play.
His ambition is to get to Lakeside and also play for England.
When I asked Dean for a personal comment he said, “when I was growing up my idol as far as darts was concerned was my dad Earnest Winstanley, so I just want to be as good as he was and would love to be able to take him to
Lakeside to with me because we always used to watch it together when I was a kid”
My comments on Dean are that he has been like a whirlwind bursting onto the darts scene where he is currently turning heads with his ability in such a short time. It certainly wouldn’t surprise me to see him at this years’ world championships.
